Let the pastor do that!

June 27, 2017

Is your pastor doing everything in the church? Does he sit on every committee? Does he attend all the functions? Does he do all the teaching? Is he the only one the follows up with visitors? Is he the one who plans Vacation Bible School?

Why?

Sometimes, it’s because the church is just getting started and no one else is able to do the job.

Other times, it might be because the church has gotten used to him doing everything.

And I suppose in some cases, it’s the pastor who won’t let anyone else do anything.

Whatever the reason, it’s not the biblical picture of how a church should function.

Look what Paul wrote in Ephesians 4:11-12:

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,

The shepherds, the pastors, are given by Jesus Christ as a gift to the church, not to be the CEO, nor the only one who does anything around here. His job is to equip the saints for the work of ministry. He is to prepare others to do his jobs. He is to be working himself out of a job.

If you’re a pastor reading this, what do you need to change about how you are doing in your church? Are you doing what you want, or what Christ has charged you to do?

If you’re not a pastor, what are doing to learn to do the work of the ministry? Studying the Bible? Attending teacher training classes? Getting some training in counseling? Going with your pastor to the nursing home, so that you can do it on your own?

Have you thought about going to your pastor and offering to be a student, to learn the work of the ministry from him?
