Life stinks!

July 18, 2017

Ever have one of those days? Miss the alarm. Screaming children. Late for work. Everything goes wrong. Supper burnt. Can’t get to sleep. And a headache all day.

Or what about one of those weeks…or months…or years?

When you look at your life situation, is it easier to pick out the bad things than the good ones?

And life is hard. We do face challenges and disappointments.

Death. Diseases. Financial stress. Broken relationships. Friends become enemies. Job changes. Marriage. Divorce. Children. No children.

Life does not usually turn out the way we wanted.

Read these verses from Psalm 25:16-19 –

I am lonely and afflicted.
The troubles of my heart are enlarged;
    bring me out of my distresses.
Consider my affliction and my trouble,
    and forgive all my sins.

Consider how many are my foes,
    and with what violent hatred they hate me.

Guess what! You’re not alone in your misery. You’re not the only one who has experienced the stinkiness of life. David wrote those words and his life was not a bed of roses, protected from harm and betrayal.

As he looked at his life, it was pretty miserable. Loneliness. Affliction. Emotional troubles. Distress. Sin. And enemies that hated his guts.

But the verses before and after these sentences show David’s perspective. Rather than looking at his miserable, messed-up life, he was looking to God.

Read through these verses:

Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love,
    for they have been from of old.
Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
    according to your steadfast love remember me,
    for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!

Good and upright is the Lord;
    therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
He leads the humble in what is right,
    and teaches the humble his way.
10 All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,
    for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.

(Psalm 25:6-10)

Life stinks. But God is merciful, loving, good, upright, and faithful.

No one else in your life may have even a hint of those traits. But God does.

He is merciful. He’s not going to treat you unfairly.

He is loving. He’s going to give you the love that no one else can.

He is good. Whatever He brings across your path is good for you.

He is upright. He doesn’t do anything wrong.

He is faithful. He doesn’t change. He keeps His promises. He isn’t going to turn His back on you.

And there’s more…read the rest of the Psalm. And then keep reading.
