It’s not always just the gift.

April 9, 2018

Often, the value of a gift is not alone in the gift, but in the giver. A parent does not hang every child’s scribblings on the refrigerator. But the one drawn by their child is prominently displayed, even if it requires a lot of explanation to figure out what the picture is.

A grandmother passes down her wedding ring, which probably doesn’t even have any precious stone setting. But the grandson treasures it and uses it to propose to the woman of his dreams.

It’s not always just the gift. Sometimes it’s the giver.

Look at this description of Jesus from Hebrews:

He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

Hebrews 1:3ESV

The radiance of the glory of God. All the grandeur, all the glory, and all the holiness of God are found in Jesus.

The exact imprint of His nature. Not similar, but exact. Holiness, love, justice, mercy, wrath, power, unchanging, forgiving, gracious, eternal, sovereign…all of the attributes of God are found in Christ.

He upholds the universe by the word of His power. He spoke the universe into existence. He holds it together by His power. Every planet, every galaxy, every river, every molecule, each animal, each tree – it’s all held together by His powerful word.

This powerful, majestic, glorious Savior offered the sacrifice to purify us.  His sacrifice cleansed us, so we could stand in the presence of a holy God. That’s a pretty amazing gift.

And the Giver is pretty amazing, too.

Because the Giver is who He is, the gift is secure. Because the gift is what it is, the Giver is worthy of our love, honor, and obedience.
